Adult Acne Treatments
While many people think of acne as a peril of adolescence, statistics show that 25% of men and up to 40% of women will
experience one or more episodes of acne at some time in their adult lives. The primary source for these occurrences, even if the sufferer has
never had problems before, is thought to be hormonal, which results in extra oil secretion, plugging of the pores and the breeding of bacteria
underneath.
Acne is not due to poor hygiene as once thought. However, good hygiene is an essential step in keeping adult acne under
control. Washing with a gentle soap twice a day, is preferable to more frequent washing that can dry out you entire face, and still leave you
with the acne.
Consulting a dermatologist is a wise idea, particularly if the outbreak is severe, or it continues for an extended period of time. They can
remove particularly big pustules in a way that will avoid scarring and prevent reoccurrence in that location. They can also assess whether your
outbreak is hormonal or bacterial related.
Treatment for adult acne may involve one or more of the following, either alone or in combination with other options: topical antibiotic washes
and creams, topical retinoic acid, peroxide, antibiotics taken internally, and for women, birth control pills.
Breaking pimples at home, is not a good idea. It aggravates the skin, can leave scarring, and may spread the bacteria to other pores that become
clogged and the entire problem multiplies. Over the counter products may help to some degree, but in the long run, you are more likely to save
money and aggravation by seeing a professional in skin care.
