What Types of Massage Are There

Massage is one of the most beneficial non-drug therapies available for muscle and soft tissue injury and stresses. There are many types of massage, which have specific benefits to different areas, and are performed through different techniques.

Cranio-sacral massage is one that is generally only used for locating and relieving problems that may be affecting motor, sensory, or even mental functions.

Deep tissue massage is the one most people relate with the practice. This manipulates muscles and soft tissue through deep finger pressure and long slow strokes to the affected area, often going across the grain of muscles to break the tension in them.

Swedish massage works on the muscle layers closer to the body's surface, and combines long, slow strokes with applied friction, and concurrent movement of joints. Effleurage may be applied first as a slow, gliding stroke to relax the muscles, before using more direct techniques. It can then be followed by petrissage, where the masseur/masseuse will grip, roll and knead the tissue.

Reflexology massage is the same types of manipulation applied to the hands and feet, at points that appear to be coordinated with or related to functions in other areas of the body.

One of the most stereotypical methods of massage is tapotement, the technique where short taps are applied to the muscles with the cupped edge of the masseur/masseuse's hands.

Besides relaxation and relief of muscle tension from stress, massage has two major health benefits. Our bodies produce a white fluid called lymph that transports body waste products to glands that then filter it. But since lymph depends on muscle contraction for transportation, it can remain in tissues due to injury or inactivity. Massage stimulates the lymph to move faster and disperse when tissue is manipulated. The other benefit is eliminating the build-up of lactic acid in muscles that have been used, then suddenly cease activity, such as muscle injury.

Overall, the greatest benefit is increased blood circulation to the tissues treated, and in turn, the rest of the body. This can leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
